Culture and History in Keauhou

The Big Island of Hawaii is collection of cultural and archeologial sites like no other in Hawaii. Along with the more popular sites of Puukohola in South Kohala and Puuhonua o Honaunau in South Kona, the Keauhou area is rich in Hawaiian culture and history. Located just a few minutes south from Kailua-Kona, it is a place like no other in the islands.

A visit to the Keauhou cultural areas should begin at the Keauhou Kahalu’u Heritage Center at the Keauhou Shopping Center. The small center will provide a self-guided exploration and information of the Hawaiian cultural archeological cites in the area.

Here are some of the not to be missed sites in the ahupuaa of Kahaluu

Kuamo’o Battlefield

Located at the end of Alii Drive, this was the site of a historical battle over the abolishment of cultural kapu or customs by King Kamehameha III. Kekuaokulani headed the battle where both sides were armed with guns. The bloody battled killed over 300 and resulted in a new code of conduct for all.

King Kamehameha III Birthplace

Located just mauka of the Kahaluu Bay, the site of the birthplace of Kalani Kauikeaouli who later became King Kamehmeha III. Born on March 17, 1814 to King Kamehameha the Great’s  highest ranking wife Keopuolani. It is said that Kauikeaoli was still born and was revived by high-ranking preist and prophet Kamaloihi by placing him in the nearby fresh water of Kaopa Spring.

Hapaialii and Keeku Heiau

Located along the shoreline and beaches fronting the Keauhou Beach Resort, this duo of heiau is one of more than a dozen in the area. Hapaialii was built between 1411 and 1464 and restored in 2007. The temple is believed to be a celestial calendar. From the center stone the corners of the heiau are aligned to the setting sun during the summer and winter solstices. Keeku Heiau is one of th elarge human sacrifice temples in Hawaii.
